Virtual Reality Technology represents the computer application in the future. Virtual Reality is another research hotspot after the appearance of multimedia in computer. It is a highly integration of many subjects, including hardware and software technology, sensory technology, artificial intelligence technology and three -dimensional graphics. Among all human perception, vision is the most important information channel and its response is the most sensitive. Hence the three-dimensional graphics is one of the key technologies of all.As the development of geographic information system theory and technology, two-dimensional technology becomes more and more mature. People begin to shift their focus to the research field of internet based three-dimensional geographic information system. Since then much progress has been made in the field. With the effort and cooperation among the researchers all over the world, Virtual Reality Modeling Language, VRML begins to take its shape and becomes an internationally standard modeling language. A geographic Virtual Reality Modeling Language, GeoVRML is then proposed through the improvement and extension of VRML. It provides a most handy approach to the development of internet three-dimensional geographic information system.The thesis composes of five chapters. The background and status of the research are clarified at first chapter, followed by the basic idea and key technology of Virtual Reality, VRML and GeoVRML in next chapters. In the chapter 4, the author introduces a web based method of constituting dynamic virtual scene model with the combination of Geo-VRML and Java language, taking a virtual three-dimensional globe as case study. Meanwhile data conversion interface of GeoVRML is researched on. At the last the it’s pointed out that there are still a lot of deficiencies in the application of virtual three-dimensional geographic information system based on the GeoVRML, and its future develop and research direction are discussed.
