The Research of the Application of GIS in Ecotourism Planning in the Natural Protected Area of Wanglang

The purpose of this research paper is to provide a solution to the problem that in current feasibility studies of eco-tourism developments there is much more subjective opinions than objective evaluations due to the fact that there is much more qualitative research than quantitative research and the research methodologies are obsolete.Combining the principles of Geographic Information System(GIS) and Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP),this research is practiced on Arcview 3.2,Auto CAD and Photohop CS platform based on Wanglang’s topographic charts with a proportional scale of 1:10000,aggregate resource maps,and functional maps to conduct the feasibility study and hazards and vulnerability study of Wanglang’s eco-tourism.This research is advancement in the field of eco-tourism evaluation in terms of the integration of eco-tourism theories and information technology.The research maps out the comprehensive eco-tourism feasible conditions in Wanglang areas and analyzes the basic topographic charts,and the findings are in accordance with reality.As practiced in this research,the methodology can be widely applied in other eco-tourism feasibility studies with minor adjustment.The major findings of this research are listed as the following:(1)Summarize the definition and classification of Digital Elevation Model(DEM) and make clear the purpose of DEM.(2)Review the principle of getting elevation from DEM,calculate Wanglang’s elevation, slope,slope position by Arcview 3.2,gain data proportions by gridding,and results are illustrated in histograms and table exhibits.(3)Based on DEM,this research further conducts Viewshed Analysis on Wanglang,including both Visibility Graph Analysis and Terrain Visibility Analysis.Visibility Graph Analysis answers the question of whether two points is visible from each other while Terrain Visibility Analysis answers the question of what range is visible for a particular point.Both are critical theories for eco-tourism planning.This research takes advantage of the Calculate Viewshed function in Arcview 3.2 and simulate the process of viewshed analysis and shows visibility and terrain visibility in visual charts.(4)Review the analytic hierarchy process/procedure,pick out points for attention,and further improve the application of the theory.(5)Confirm the factors of hazards and vulnerability study by weighted calculation as a practice of the Delphi method and simulate the whole process by approximate method.(6)Feasibility chart and the hazard and vulnerability chart are presented by combining the weighted calculation and weighted overlay function in GIS software Arcview 3.2.The comprehensive analysis based on GIS and eco-tourism theories provided more support for the eco-tourism management and development.
