The main task of distribution network planning is to optimize network structure, find its optimum extended plan. The optimization aim is to minimize the investment and operating cost while meet the entire network’s safety. For such a highly complicated problem, it is the key point to get the feasible optimization scheme while realizing the distribution lines’ automatic routing along the streets of the urban. After analyzing the existing methods of distribution network planning, combining the Geographic Information System of distribution network planning, the Ant Colony Algorithm and production rules are used to research the designing scheme of automatic distribution network planning system, the main work of this paper is as follows:1. The application of GIS in network distribution planning is studied, and the relative information is recognized and extracted from the vector graph in the GIS. Thus, the corresponding geographic information knowledge database is constructed.2. The optimization process is divided into two stages: searching for the shortest point-to-point route from the substation to each load point, and automatic routing optimization.(1) The basic Ant Colony Algorithm is used to search for the shortest route along the streets from substation to load point, this algorithm can get the elementary radial network planning graph of an urban area; (2) At the automatic routing optimization stage, the initial stage’s results are fully used into the initial scheme of the Ant Colony’s pheromone initialization and dynamic updates, the production rules for processing load information are added into state transfer principles.Based on the above improvements, the paper presents an improved Ant Colony Algorithm for practical distribution network planning problems. The simulation results of practical planning regions show the effectiveness and the application value of the presented method.
